2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Toyota RAV4: Better Style and Sophistication

2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Toyota RAV4: Better Style and Sophistication

Mazda knocks it out of the park with the CX-5—a refined, capable, and advanced compact crossover. The CX-5 also provides better agility and power than in previous generations, and more drivers across Canada are discovering it.

The compact crossover segment is very competitive, and we are proud to compare the CX-5 to the established Toyota RAV4.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 comes out ahead in stylish fashion

First, the Mazda CX-5 is far more advanced in terms of style. The RAV4, with eccentric lines and plastic fender lining, leaves a less refined impression. It's more conventional than the luxury crossover looks and feel of the CX-5.

If you want a crossover that shines in all situations—and for a similar price—the CX-5 fits right in.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 makes performance more accessible

Performance and driving dynamics are two very important pillars at Mazda. The CX-5 features two powertrains. The GX, GS, Signature and GT grades include a gas-powered 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The RAV4's main powertrain makes a little bit more horsepower, but the CX-5 has more torque.

However, both vehicles upgrade their engines in higher grades. Three CX-5 models make available a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. For an introductory MSRP that's less than $40,000, you can have this turbocharged powertrain beginning in the CX-5 GT model.

The RAV4's hybrid (non-Prime) grades include 219 net horsepower, but that's still well below the capability of the turbo-equipped CX-5. You will also have to settle with much less torque, and that makes a difference when you need it off-road or to get around traffic.

The Mazda CX-5 offers the best all-wheel-drive system in this comparison with the advanced i-Activ AWD, a system that reads the road and gives you the best traction in every driving situation. Also, the CX-5 comes with GVC+, which greatly improves cornering.

Both vehicles have their differences inside, including available amenities, comforts, and conveniences. Although the CX-5 and RAV4 have comparable overall passenger volume, the CX-5 provides more front headroom and rear legroom than the RAV4. But the CX-5 deploys superior finishes and materials, making it a more welcoming environment.
