Comparing the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and Honda Pilot

When it comes to three-row SUVs, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and the 2024 Honda Pilot are two vehicles that often come to mind. Both have their unique strengths and cater to different types of drivers. Here’s a detailed comparison of these two vehicles based on Canadian specifications and pricing.

2024 Mazda CX-90

The Mazda CX-90 is available in 8 trim levels. The entry-level GS AWD 8AT model, equipped with a Hybrid: 3.3L I-6 & 12-kW motor & 0.33-kWh & Lithium Ion battery, starts at $45,900 Canadian dollars. The mid-range GT AWD 8AT trim is priced at $55,350 MSRP, while the top-of-the-line Signature trim comes in at $64,350.

The Mazda CX-90 brings Mazda’s signature athletic luxe vibe to the three-row class. It features a new turbocharged and hybridized inline six-cylinder engine that delivers a combined 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The steering is responsive, and there’s a surprising amount of agility. The ride quality is smooth, the suspension eats up most of the road imperfections, and it’s enjoyable to drive, given its size.

The CX-90 features sultry sheet metal that stands apart from many of its more subdued rivals. The cabin overachieves, particularly in terms of the materials Mazda has selected for high-trim models. The CX-90 is designed with sleek curves that bring dynamic reflections of light and shadows to life.

In terms of fuel economy, the Mazda CX-90 offers ratings of 9.9 L/100 km city, 8.4 L/100 km highway, and 9.3 L/100 km combined for the standard e-Skyactiv 3.3L Inline 6 Turbo engine. For the high-output 3.3L turbo six-cylinder engine, it delivers an estimated fuel economy of 10.3 L/100 km city and 8.5 highway.

2024 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot is offered in 5 trim levels. The entry-level Sport model, powered by a Gasoline: 3.5L V-6, is priced at $51,650 Canadian dollars. The mid-range TrailSport trim comes in at $58,450 MSRP, and the top-tier Black Edition is priced at $63,850.

The Pilot offers flexible seating for up to seven or eight passengers, depending on the trim. It features a powerful, rugged exterior and a spacious, fully loaded cabin with innovative solutions like an available stowable 2nd-row center seat. It is powered by a 24-valve V6 engine and features a 10-speed automatic transmission. With Integrated Drive Modes (Normal, Econ, Snow, Sport, Tow, and available Trail and Sand), the Pilot is engineered to help you feel in your element in any element. It also offers a refined ride and a versatile and capable TrailSport trim. Despite the dynamic drive modes, the ride is certainly not as precise, responsive or as fun as the CX-90.

The 2024 Pilot is not available with any hybrid technology meaning that it doesn't manage as well as the CX-90 when it comes to fuel economy with just about 12/7 L/100km city and 11.2 on the highway.

Conclusion

Both the Mazda CX-90 and the Honda Pilot offer compelling options for those in the market for a three-row SUV. However, if driving dynamics, interior quality, and fuel economy are the most important factors to you, the Mazda has the upper hand. And remember, there’s no substitute for a test drive to get a real feel for their performance and comfort.
